Does the African Union have open borders like the Euopean Union?
Q. Do they have something similar to the "Schengen Agreement" yet? Or are they planning it for the future?

A. Borders are controlled, although it is relatively easy for citizens of some (though not all) African nations to travel to neighboring countries, often without passports or national identity cards. Africa has 14 regional organisations, including the African Union (AU). Citizens of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) can obtain an ECOWAS passport that allows them to travel between 15 ECOWAS member nations. If they are travelling by land, they often do not even need an ECOWAS passport, although border guards and immigration officials are often corrupt, and demand bribes. Other major organisations include the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the East Africa Community (Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda). Member… [cont.]

A. The African Union is an extremely diverse and rather weak regional organization compared to others around the world. The most interesting African conflict in recent memory (in my opinion) is the Second Congo War... but that technically ended a few years ago. Conflicts currently ongoing include: the continued instability in Somalia (there is an AU peacekeeping force in Mogadishu), continued ethnic/economic/religious /... conflict in the Sudan, religious conflict in Nigeria, the civil war in Chad, and the whole Western Sahara thing (Morocco isn't a part of the AU for the very reason that the AU recognizes Western Sahara's sovereignty). The African Union is primarily concerned with however combating AIDS, increasing political unity on… [cont.]

A. As Chris says they never had any credibility in the first place and all that has happened is that they have provided further evidence of the fact that they are a backward race unable to self govern.

A. Abolitionist leaders such Fredrick Douglass stressed that black fighters should be intergrated into the United States army. President Lincoln thought that it wasnt a good time but by 1863 he intergrated the 54th and 55th Army Regiments which were both colored. The 54th Massachusettes is one of the most celebrated Civil War Colored units. It was headed by Col. Robert Gould Shaw whose memorial sits in Washington to this day. Thier heorics are depicted in the film "Glory". The Confederate states of America headed by Jefferson Davis never took black prisoners of war which offended Lincoln. Douglass's son fought along side the 54th regiment. Also, the magintude of a black unit marching through southern streets scared many southerns becuase of… [cont.]

A. I think it's well over the time that something should be done about Zimbabwe. That country is facing a huge humanitarian disaster and no one does anything! From being a rich agricultural nation it has descended into a state where hardly any food is produced, inflation is out of control and intimidation and murder by the government is rife. Now there is a vast highway to nowhere being built in Harare with Chinese money. The African Union should have stepped in years ago and so should Britain.
