A military is an organization authorized to use force, usually including use of weapons, in defending its country by combating actual or perceived threats. As an adjective the term "military" is also used to refer to any property or aspect of a military. Militaries often function as societies within societies, by having their own military communities, economies, education, medicine and other aspects of a functioning civilian society.

The profession of soldiering as part of a military group is older than recorded history itself. Some of the most enduring images of the classical antiquity portray the power and feats of its military leaders. The Battle of Kadesh in 1274 BC was one of the defining points of Pharaoh Ramesses II's reign and is celebrated in bas-relief on his monuments. A thousand years later the first emperor of unified China, Qin Shi Huang, was so determined to impress the gods with his military might that he was buried with an army of terracotta soldiers. The Romans were dedicated to military matters, leaving to posterity many treatises and writings as well as a large number of lavishly carved triumphal arches and columns.

In the modern era, world wars and countless other major conflicts have changed the employment of the militaries beyond recognition to their ancient participants. Empires have come and gone; states have grown and declined. Enormous social changes have been wrought, and military power continues to dominate international relations. The role of the military today is as central to global societies as it ever was.

Why is the military spraying barium and aluminum particles in the atmosphere over populated areas?
Q. I've heard a couple of reasons. To combat global warming, the particles reflect UV rays from the sun. The military is experimenting with ways to make the atmosphere more conductive for the HARPE weapon. The military is experimenting with radar jamming techniques. Other reasons I've heard are a bit extreme and involve to much speculation. If anyone has any insight on this or knows of any activists groups out there trying to put a stop to these experiments/practices please respond. Thank you.

A. And despite what you have "heard", what makes you think that the military is actually doing that? And by the way, I have a bridge for sale. Interested? Here's something you can add to your conspiracy theory.

Military wives: How long after the wedding did you get pregnant?
Q. I just married into the Navy last month, and his friends are joking and betting on when I'll be pregnant. Yikes! We don't want to have kids for a few more years, but it seems to be a popular trend that military wives - or even newlyweds in general - are getting pregnant soon after they get married! Just would like to hear your stories:) Thanks!

A. I was in the military when I had my first two children, and now I am a military spouse and have just had my third. DO NOT rush into having children especially if your husband is in the military and could be deployed. Make sure you are OK with his work schedule and with him possibly being gone for long periods of time (at which time you become a single parent). I truly believe that too many women get pregnant too soon and then they become overwhelmed and can not handle what the military has to offer. Yes we have medical and a guaranteed paycheck and free housing if you choose it, but we don't always have a spouse. If you don't have personal experience with the military (ie you are prior military or maybe a parent was) don't rush it!!! It… [cont.]

What is the consequence for a military spouse lying on a military sworn statement?
Q. If a female spouse lies on a military sworn statement about her husband assaulting her, what are the consequences? Can the military punish her? what happens?

A. The military can't legally punish her because she is a civilian and a civilian is not subject to UCMJ. They can kick her off post and bar her from returning, though. However, it is still a crime to lie on an official statement, especially in order to get someone in trouble. If she is caught she could possibly face criminal charges in a civilian court.

  • "In the various states of society, armies are recruited from very different motives. Barbarians are urged by the love of war; the citizens of a free republic may be prompted by a principle of duty; the subjects, or at least the nobles, of a monarchy, are animated by a sentiment of honor; but the timid and luxurious inhabitants of a declining empire must be allured into the service by the hopes of profit, or compelled by the dread of punishment".
  • "What the main drift of the twentieth century has revealed is that the economy has become concentrated and incorporated in the great hierarchies, the military has become enlarged and decisive to the shape of the entire economic structure; and moreover the economic and the military have become structurally and deeply interrelated, as the economy has become a seemingly permanent war economy; and military men and policies have increasingly penetrated the corporate economy".
