China is seen variously as an ancient civilization extending over a large area in East Asia, a nation and/or a multinational entity.

China is one of the world's oldest civilizations and is regarded as the oldest continuous civilization. Prior to the nineteenth century, it possessed one of the most advanced society and economy in the world through successive dynasties though it subsequently missed the industrial revolution and began to decline. In the 19th and 20th century, imperialism, internal weakness and civil wars damaged the country and its economy and led to the overthrow of imperial rule.

In 1949, when major combat ended in the Chinese Civil War, two political entities emerged having the term "China" in their names:

In the 1950s, change to economic policies in Taiwan transformed the island into a technology-oriented industrialized developed economy after a period of high growth rates and rapid industrialization. In mainland China, in the 1970s, reforms known as the Four Modernizations modernized the agriculture, industry, technology and defense, vastly raising living standards, and making the PRC one of the great powers.

Historically, China's cultural sphere has extended across East Asia as a whole, with Chinese religion, customs, and writing systems being adopted to varying degrees by neighbors such as Japan, Korea and Vietnam. Through its history, China was the source of many major inventions. It has also one of the world's oldest written language systems. The first evidence of human presence in the region was found at the Zhoukoudian cave. It is one of the earliest known specimens of Homo erectus, now commonly known as the Peking Man, estimated to have lived from 300,000 to 780,000 years ago.

China is a cultural region and ancient civilization in East Asia. China refers to a one of the world's oldest civilization comprising successive states and cultures dating back more than 6,000 years. Due to the stalemate of the last Chinese Civil War following World War II, China currently looks like two separate countries: the People's Republic of China (PRC) and Republic of China (ROC). The PRC administers and governs mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau, while the ROC administers and governs Taiwan and its surrounding islands. Each government used to claim that it was the only official government of China. However, PRC is nowadays widely accepted in the world as the only offical government.

Why are Americans concerned about China becoming the next world superpower when the EU is taking over?
Q. Nobody is talking about changing the world reserve currency to Yuan. Nobody thinks China will control world oil production. China's economy is catching up and is close to America's but the EU already surpassed the US. Do Americans just think the EU is some benign entity with no motivations? Why worry about something like China that might happen when the EU is happening?

A. it seems by the answers here that many Americans don`t really understand what the EU actually is ..it`s true there are many countries in the EU but they are member states that come under the European parliament which is due to appoint a president to preside over them all you`re correct in saying that the EU is wealthier than both the US and China and in answer to one person here who said Europe is a bunch of failed states according to the wealth per capita statistics out of the top 13 countries 11 are European with the US coming only 8th saying that i don`t think that Europe poses any threat to the US however a bit of balance of power isn`t necessarily a bad thing

How is China still socialist if it has a market economy?
Q. China now is becoming more market-oriented, but I am still confused as to how China is still socialist. If China is becoming increasingly market-oriented, how does it still have a socialist system? What characteristics of China make it a socialist state? Well, if you're in party mode then why would you want to answer a question like this? :o Anyway, we make no bones about it, nice weekend to you too my friend.

A. China has something called "market socialism." This means the state owns much of the assets in the economy, whether it be certain industries (usually "commanding heights"), or a large percentage of the companies, but the government doesn't set the prices. In a fully socialized economy, the government planning board sets prices, and tries to control both the supply and demand in the economy. China still adheres to Marxist Ideology, and has a one-party system. They have been adapting/reevaluating their definition of Marxism as they have become more involved with international trade. Wikipedia has an article on "Socialism with Chinese Characteristics" and "Market Socialism." A more detailed explanation of Market Socialism is at … [cont.]

What are the implications of China devaluing its currency?
Q. Why is America getting so upset about the possibility of China devaluing its currency? Is it really that bad? Surely it will help countries that import goods from China?
Asked by Carefree - Fri Dec 5 14:58:53 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Taking the perspective of a US consumer, if China devalues the rimmibi then the exchange rate $/Rim will appreciate. This means that Chinese goods will be cheaper for us to buy, however this is not the pressure china's currency is undergoing. The Rim is under pressure to let is currency appreciate (Rim/$), meaning this will make Chinese goods more expensive. The reason why is that China peg is artificially lower making their goods more competitive. This discussion has been going on for a long time. Since it started, China has had increase worries about inflationary pressure inside there country. If you keep you goods artificially cheap visa vis an exchange rate regiem then prices inside your country will rise. The Chinese government has… [cont.]
