The United Nations Organization (UNO) or simply United Nations (UN) (Arabic: الأمم المتحدة, French: Organisation des Nations Unies, Chinese: 联合国 / 聯合國, Spanish: Organización de las Naciones Unidas, Russian: Организация Объединённых Наций) Filipino: Organisasyon ng Nagkakaisang mga Bansa is an international organization whose stated aims are facilitating cooperation in international law, international security, economic development, social progress, human rights, and achievement of world peace. The UN was founded in 1945 after World War II to replace the League of Nations, to stop wars between countries, and to provide a platform for dialogue. It contains multiple subsidiary organizations to carry out its missions.

There are currently 192 member states, including nearly every sovereign state in the world. From its offices around the world, the UN and its specialized agencies decide on substantive and administrative issues in regular meetings held throughout the year. The organization has six principal organs: the General Assembly (the main deliberative assembly); the Security Council (for deciding certain resolutions for peace and security); the Economic and Social Council (for assisting in promoting international economic and social cooperation and development); the Secretariat (for providing studies, information, and facilities needed by the UN); the International Court of Justice (the primary judicial organ); and the United Nations Trusteeship Council (which is currently inactive). Other prominent UN System agencies include the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Food Programme (WFP) and United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). The UN's most visible public figure is the Secretary-General, currently Ban Ki-moon of South Korea, who attained the post in 2007. The organization is financed from assessed and voluntary contributions from its member states, and has six official languages: Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), English, French, Russian and Spanish.

Is the United States contempt for the United Nations the biggest scandal of all?
Q. The USA Government continues to be contemptuous of the United Nations thus undermining the credibility and influence of the UN. But the US has over all too many years failed to support the UN financially to the extent that it could and should. The scandal is that America is frighteningly willing to spend billions of dollars on war, but unwilling to spend a fraction of that on peace. The UN gives peace a chance - but the US prefers the sword and treats the UN with contempt. How sad and contemptible is this?

A. America is a founding member of the UN and holds a very important veto power in her Security Council. What we are all seeing now as regards to America's attitude to the UN is a result of the impotency of America's diplomacy, seems the US State does not have the capacity and skills needed to explain to the world Americas standing on issues...and at the face of International reluctance to tow her line, we see behaviour that can best be classed as infantile. We are in the 21st century, everybody should have their say and due respect.

Where can I find easy to understand information on the United Nations?
Q. I'm doing a report for school on the United Nations, and it's difficult to find information that is easily understood. The UN website is of no help to me, and is too complicated. My teacher doesn't really like us using Wikipedia, and Google searches aren't yeilding much yet. Links to useful sites with good, simple and to the point information would be appreciated. I need information that includes: Background of the UN, the past and present goals of it, the pros and cons of the United Nations, current events within the last six monthes that concerns it, and the future outlook on the group.
