Q. How has the United Nations responded to nations that have violated the Universal Declaration of Human Rights? Give at least one specific example, and explain whether or not the UN actions were effective at protecting the rights. I need some of your opinions or examples, i don't really understand this question. Thanks sooo much to those of you who help me :)

A. First of all theirs the bosnian civil war where those who perpetrated and ordered the genocide have been brought to trial in front of the international criminal coart in The Hague. Another example is the trial of the former liberian president in front of the same coart. so yes the UN does have teeth.

What is the United Nations Administrative Support Assessment Test about?
Q. Im planning to finish high school this year and i want to get a job at the UN and it says i have to take the United Nations Administrative Support Assessment Test which i don't much about??? any can help???

A. If I recall the test is divided into two parts. One is general or world knowledge and the other is administrative; I seem to recall there being some simple math questions included in part 1 also. My suggestion is - if you can - take a secretarial course - also in this day of computers being able to type properly is always a good thing. It will provide you with office organizational skills that will help with part two.

How much money do countries contribute to the United Nations?
Q. Hi, I'm currently in the process of writing a position paper for model United Nations. Could someone please give me a link to a website where I could find out what percentage of the U.N.'s money comes from which country, I don't know where to look, but I know it exists.
Asked by williebaznj - Sat Jan 2 15:16:42 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The UN is financed from assessed and voluntary contributions from member states. The regular two-year budgets of the UN and its specialized agencies are funded by assessments. The General Assembly approves the regular budget and determines the assessment for each member. This is broadly based on the relative capacity of each country to pay, as measured by their Gross National Income (GNI), with adjustments for external debt and low per capita income. See link below for PDF of 2009 funding from each country.

A. Works by Associations, Corporations, Government Agencies, etc. The names of groups that serve as authors (corporate authors) are usually written out each time they appear in a text reference. (National Institute of Mental Health [NIMH], 2007) When appropriate, the names of some corporate authors are spelled out in the first reference and abbreviated in all subsequent citations. The general rule for abbreviating in this manner is to supply enough information in the text citation for a reader to locate its source in the Reference List without difficulty. (NIMH, 2007) Works with No Author When a work has no author, use the first two or three words of the work's title (omitting any initial articles) as your text reference, capitalizing… [cont.]

A. The UN charter recognizes the sovereignty of every state and so forced removal of the government of any one state would be a direct violation of its own charter...although that type of contradictory policy didn't stop W from embarking on secretive and warrantless wiretaps. What's more, is that the UN does not need to remove a head of state. It has shown flashes of brilliance in dealing with illegitimate and brutal regimes typified by the divestment campaign against the South African apartheid government. With Cold War tensions gone and the world security issues instead focused on fighting state-less terrorism, I think we will see a resurgence in the UN's application of diplomatic pressure to forward human rights and peace. A. The UN has never decided to end the mandate system. From time to time the different bodies of the United Nations pass resolutions which contain operating paragraphs that begin with the words "requests", "calls upon", or "encourages", which the Secretary-General interprets as a mandate to set up a temporary organization or do something. These mandates can be as little as researching and publishing a written report, or mounting a full scale peace-keeping operation (usually the exclusive domain of the Security Council). The United Nations has not implemented the mandate system to form new states within recent years, however, they could still do so if they wished to. The problem would only exist in how effectively they could do so. The lack… [cont.]

Q. Compare their similarities and differences. Pleas explain why you think the United Nations has been successful as opposed to the League of Nations.

A. The League of Nations was an inter-governmental organization founded as a result of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919 1920, and the forerunner to the United Nations. The diplomatic philosophy behind the League represented a fundamental shift in thought from the preceding hundred years. The League lacked its own armed force and so depended on the Great Powers to enforce its resolutions, keep to economic sanctions which the League ordered, or provide an army, when needed, for the League to use. However, they were often reluctant to do so. The onset of the Second World War demonstrated that the League had failed in its primary purpose, which was to avoid any future world war. A. They showed absolutely no remorse or restraint in their bombing raids. They may not have targeted civilians, but it seems like they had no target in mind at all, just bomb the hell out of whatever is standing. For every rocket that has gone into Israel hundreds of Palestinians were killed. One quarter were civilians. Not really a fair trade. They also killed U.N. aid workers. They deserve everything they get.

A. First let's talk about the most important ones, the ones from the Security Council. Those are, according to international law, legally binding for all member states. A good reason for the US to follow those resolutions, therefore, is that they are legally binding (although of course there is no real way to enforce compliance). Another good reason that the US should comply with all SC Resolutions is that the US has a veto right over them. That means that no Security Council resolution can be passed without US approval (or abstention). Why not comply with something you agreed with? Now let's go to the more difficult category - the resolutions passed by the General Assembly. First of all, these resolutions are not legally binding. That means… [cont.]

I would like to work as an interpreter/translator for the United Nations. Where should I start?
Q. I have a bachelor degree in International Relations studies. I love learning foreign languages. I have been doing translation/interpretatio n from Indonesian (my mother tongue) to English. I also have experiences as rapporteur in seminars/workshops as well. I have never attended a formal interpretation training school, however. Can anybody suggest me where to start if I would like to have a career in translation/interpretatio n, or document checking in international organizations, or maybe in United Nations itself? Thank you.
